The cell color indicates the highest resolution possible for given color depth and available RAM.
The data in this table pertains only to 2-D graphics; displaying images, surfing the 'net, &c. Windows (and other GUI OSs?) will use far more video RAM while multi-tasking.
IIRC, having five open windows will crash a W3.1 system which has a 512KB vid card installed:-( The smallest RAMs once saw good service displaying text or wire-frame models.
